Statewide Disability Service

Our Role

Statewide Disability Services (SDS) is Corrective Services NSW’s (CSNSW) primary method of addressing the additional support needs of offenders with disabilities.

SDS is a multidisciplinary team that works with all offenders with a disability who are under the management of Corrective Services NSW – whether in custody or in the community. SDS functions in a number of capacities including

  • direct work with offenders including assessment, behaviour management, and program facilitation
  • providing support, consultation and advice to staff managing offenders with a disability
  • develop programs for offenders with disability to address their offending behaviour
  • providing advice and consultation to internal and external stakeholders
  • ensuring that issues impacting offenders with disability are adequately addressed via policy and procedure.

A primary function of SDS is to focus on the pre release planning of offenders with an intellectual disability, which includes making referrals to Ageing Disability and Home Care (ADHC) including the Community Justice Program (CJP) and other disability related community service providers.

To be eligible for service from SDS, an offender must have one or more of the following disabilities:

  • Intellectual Disability or low cognitive functioning
  • Acquired Brain Injury (including traumatic brain injury and Alcohol/Drug Related Brain Injury)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (i.e. Autism or Aspergers)
  • Dementia
  • Sensory Disability (Hearing or Vision Impairment)
  • Physical Disability
  • Frail Aged

Some of the services that SDS provides are:

  • Additional Support Units
  • Assessment of Disability
  • Advice, recommendations and assistance with placement, daily management, program and work options 
  • Assistive Devices physical or sensory disabilities
  • Development of and consultation regarding programs for people with disability to address their offending behaviour
  • Assistance with Pre Release Planning and Case Planning
  • Staff Training
