Commissioner's Welcome

Commissioner Peter Severin

Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) delivers professional correctional services and programs to reduce re-offending and enhance community safety. As an important element of the criminal justice system, we manage remand and sentenced inmates as well as offenders in the community. The public may be surprised to learn that there are nearly twice as many offenders in the community than in our correctional facilities.

We place great emphasis on diversionary programs with the effect that less people come into custody. Resources have been shifted from correctional centres out into the community where a growing number of offenders are serving Intensive Correction Orders. Under these orders offenders are supervised and monitored in the community by CSNSW staff. They face strict curfews, random alcohol and drug tests, and must participate in rehabilitation programs to address their offending behaviour as well as complete 32 hours of community work each month.

We have dedicated teams providing support and programs to offenders in our correctional centres, Community Offender Management offices, transitional centres and community residential facilities. Rigorous offender assessments ensure we match the ‘right’ offender with the ‘right’ program appropriate to their level of risk of re-offending.

CSNSW also embraces a collaborative offender management approach across the criminal justice and human services sectors to better link offenders to services. This cohesive approach guarantees that we are not dealing with people and their service needs in silos.

We are cost-efficient and smart in delivering effective services to enhance community safety as well as public sector accountability. This involves staff linking offenders to support services and programs as well as housing, employment, training and education arrangements for those in custody and in the community.

Through our delivery of services and programs, offenders gain the building blocks to successfully live in the community and break down the re-offending cycle.
